The Suffolk County Parks Dept has committed to the creation of two additional dog parks in 2009. The first to open, probably by early July, will be in Patchogue and includes approximately 1000 feet of water access on a beautiful beach. This park will essentially be a natural borders park (basically an unfenced, leash free area), although there will be a snow fence along it’s northern border. Because this park is isolated from other County parks it will be unmanned, unserviced and there will be no waste receptacles. Thus, the users of this park must not only pick up after their dogs, but they must also carry the waste away and dispose of it properly. It is extremely important to understand that this park represents an experiment by the Parks Dept and if users abuse this park and do not clean up and carry out their waste this wonderful site will be closed.
The other new park, planed for a September opening, will be in Coram and is approximately 100 acres. Like the Patchogue site this will be a natural borders area and will also require that waste be carried out. There are many paths which will be great for walking with your dog.
